How We Scanned Detroit Landmarks with Laser Tracker Technology

What does the Michigan Central Station, the Joe Louis statue in the Cobo Center and the Tiger statues outside of Comerica Park all have in common? They are all iconic landmarks that have graced the Greater Detroit area foryears. What else? They have all recently been scanned with metrology-grade accuracy thanks to a host of our laser tracker systems and scanning technologies.

In May of this year, we participated in SME’s “3D in theD” Scanning Event in Detroit. This project engaged various technology leaders to scan objects of interest around Detroit and utilize the scan files to 3D print each object for the creation of a cityscape display at the RAPID + TCT Event.

Watch as laser tracker expert Joel Martin shares his experience of this large-scale project, and how a range of technology, from aerial drones to the Leica Absolute Tracker ATS600, was used to capture the data necessary to pull off this feat.
