Employee Spotlight – Ryan Toole

How did you get into this line of work?
I’ve always enjoyed working with people and helping customers solve problems.  I was in sales for a while and it’s a great feeling when you can introduce a solutionthat you believe in and show your customer its worth.  Product management can be looked at as an extension of sales but instead of introducing solutions, you have a chance to help design and build them.

What does your day to day look like at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence? Describe a day in the life.
My time is split between sales, customers, R&D and working with other colleagues in similar positions throughout the world.  I will always put solving immediate customer issues at the top of my priority list but have a running queue of “mini-projects” I’m working on at any point in time.  These range from creating video content andbrochure material to researching what keeps our customers up at night and trying to think of ways to help them.

What are your future goals?
For me, constantly learning is a major driver in my daily life.  I’m relatively new to Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence and there is so much I still don’t know so for now, my goals are to try to soak up as much knowledge as I can, learn from the individuals I work with on a daily basis and continue to help people solve problems.

Why is throughput so important to manufacturers today, and what is Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence doing to help improve throughput?
Throughput is a key ingredient in productivity.  metrology has traditionally been a bottleneck in manufacturing, so focusing on increasing throughput in the inspection phase of manufacturing relieves the bottleneck and gets manufacturers back to high levels of productivity.  We at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, and specifically in product management, are investing our efforts in technologies that directly impact throughput.  For example, the GLOBAL Advantage HTA released earlier this year employs probing technology which decreases the time it takes to inspect a single compressor blade by a factor between 2 and 5 times.

How does sensing, thinking, and acting play into that improvement of productivity?
Each of those 3 words can have a great impact on productivity.  From gathering data, to acting on that data to converting it to actionable results, there are tactics and strategies to increase productivity in each phase.

What do you do for fun outside of working at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence? Hobbies?
I like getting outdoors.  My wife and I just moved back to Rhode Island and we’re discovering a lot of great hiking trails in the protected parks.  In the winter I like to get up to the mountains in New Hampshire and Vermont for snowboarding.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I lived in the Philippines for a year working 3rd shift.
