Employee Spotlight: Marco Massaia

What is your name and position within Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence?

My name is Marco Massaia, and I’m Research and Development Manager at our Torino factory in Italy.

How did you get into this line of work?

I worked for over 15 years at Vigel, a company that produces machining centres (turn key solutions). This gave me wide ranging experience in manufacturing and many applications. The products we were making were inspected using Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). I’ve had a long interest in the areas of industry and solutions Hexagon deals in, so taking on the R&D role at Hexagon in 2015 was a natural step for me.

Every day is a new experience. New ideas, new developments, new projects – innovation is at the heart of Hexagon and it’s central to daily life for my dynamic team in Torino. In my role I coordinate my team to design products that best fits customer demands in terms of quality, efficiency, and reliability.

What major changes do you see impacting manufacturing over the next five years?

Market demands related to quality, throughput and efficiency get more and more demanding. To satisfy these requirements, we’re going to see increasing inline integration of CMMs, helping to streamline the production line and enhance manufacturers’ ability to monitor production processes.

I think we will see an even more widespread influence of Industry 4.0. In particular, new Internet of Things (IoT) applications will generate large amounts of data that will be analysed in real time to increase the efficiency not only of the CMM but of the entire process.

What are your future goals?

I want to continue to be part of the innovation at Hexagon, designing solutions that satisfy our customers and allow them to grow their business.

What do you do for fun outside of working at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence?

I like diving – into the sea and out of the sky! But travel is my passion.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I like manual work. Whether it’s using wood, brick, or welded steel, I like to do interior design work, adding details to my home.
