Developing a solution to reduce risk of deep vein thrombosis with VISI and WORKNC

Just days before his wedding, Paul Westerman collapsed in his bathroom. He wasn’t breathing.

At the hospital, a CT scan showed Paul had suffered a pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

One of the leading causes of DVT is lengthy physical inactivity, such as during long-haul travel or while recovering from an operation. In an increasingly sedentary world, where the World Health Organization describes physical inactivity as a global health problem, solutions to reduce the risk of DVT have never been more critical.

As a survivor, Paul has dedicated himself to a range of thromboembolic-related causes and research. He is the Managing Director of RBR ActiveTM, developer of RBR LegflowTM, a medical device designed to reduce the risk of DVT by increasing blood flow to lower limbs through foot exercises while seated.

RBR ActiveTM worked with UK-based Fenton Precision Engineering to develop RBR LegflowTM  and design and engineer a steel mould tool to produce the product. This required the utmost capabilities in simulation and reverse engineering. Fenton Precision Engineering used the mould and die CAD CAM software VISI and WORKNC CAM software for 2 to 5-axis CNC programming.
