5 presentations for the energy and power generation sector

The energy and power generation sector, perhaps more than any other, has always sought to reinvent and improve itself. The quest for efficiency and sustainability has spurred the market on to some fascinating achievements. In this blog post we highlight five online video presentations from the Design and Engineering library, available free of charge.

These are just a sample of the 256 talks we’ve made freely available to all. Click here to see the full list of inspiring and informative presentations from industry leaders.

1.   Bridging the gap between CAD and structural analysis

There are many design approaches you can take when planning offshore structures like wind turbines. More often than not, it’s a process of incremental improvements with diverse stakeholders. Because of that, the workflow needs to allow for frequent changes during the design process. This first presentation focuses on how MSC Apex and Sesam (a suite of software from DNV) help teamwork and speed up the process from weeks to days.

Ole Jan, Sesam Product Director at DNV, explains the challenges of designing offshore structures like wind turbines. Hear how the combination of MSC Apex and Sesam provides a powerful solution.

2.   Evolution of offshore wind turbine technology

China has adopted wind energy at an astonishing rate in recent years. It’s installed capacity of offshore wind farms has grown by 50% since 2019. That seals China’s place among the world leaders in wind energy technology.

Mr. Qiying Zhang, President and CTO of Mingyany Smart Energy Group, shares his expert view on the wind energy market. His presentation covers the evolution of wind turbine technology. From humble origins to automated, smart digital solutions, the technology has come a long way.

This talk also discusses the specific conditions in China, and how they compare to Europe and the rest of the world. Low wind speeds with the risk of typhoons has led to larger turbines and longer rotor blades.

3.   Wind turbine drivetrain certification – trends and development

Certification is an important part of wind turbine design and manufacture. Karl Steingroever, Senior Engineer at DNV GL, introduces the topic by charting the origins of the industry. At the outset, fewer and less specific design rules resulted in higher failure rates. The current situation is much more comprehensive. Certification now covers everything from individual components through to full projects.

A large part of this talk addresses the future trends and developments for this sector. In the push for sustainable energy, wind turbines are a valuable part of the mix. Turbines and drivetrains are likely to become much bigger in the future. Energy companies will look for site specific variants to create more efficient solutions. These changes will have a direct effect on the nature of the certification required.

4.   Optimisation of casing buckling and deformation responses in shale gas wells

Over the past 100 years shale gas has become an important contributor to global energy resources. Advances like horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing allow gas extraction at scale.

James Njuguna is a professor of composite materials at Robert Gorden University, Scotland. Here he discusses a research study that reduced buckling and deformation of the well casing. If a well casing fails, the best-case scenario could be a multi-million dollar bill to re-establish the well shaft or go around the buckled area. The worst-case scenario? Abandon the site entirely.

5.   Cost optimised components for single axis trackers

FTC Solar is a global provider of solar tracker systems, technology, software and engineering systems. Principal engineer Joe LoBue uses Hexagon software to cut the weight of slew drive brackets. A slew drive is a type of gearbox often found in solar trackers and wind turbines. Cost savings like this help FTC Solar remain one of the most competitive single axis tracker companies in the renewable sector.

In this short talk, Joe explains how they did it, and how MSC Apex and Nastran were vital to the project. Watch it here: https://events.hexagon.com/hxgnlive-designandengineering/agenda/session/635034
